Amie Wolfe – 2002 National Youth Winner

Cincinnati, OH
A friend’s mom who had cancer was the inspiration for Amie
to plan a fundraiser that raised $10,000 for Cancer Family Care. Amie, her two
triplet sisters and several friends at Indian Hill High School made the decision
in the fall to plan a fundraiser for Cancer Family Care. Amie became the leader
of the group, not only in planning the fundraiser, but personally getting
involved as a volunteer at the agency, and encouraging her sisters and friends
to do so as well.
As the event got closer, the significance of what she was
doing escalated, as her friend’s mom began another round of chemotherapy.
“She told me that it was her boys, the book she was writing, and this
fundraiser that were keeping her going.” Amie says that’s when it hit her
– this was more than a senior project. “It wasn’t the money that mattered,
it was seeing how people were affected.”
During the course of her senior year, Amie
volunteered in support groups for children who have a parent with cancer,
facilitated at a day camp for children touched by cancer, and implemented an
educational program at a junior high school. “Amie contributed over 300 hours
to these projects, while maintaining a job and carrying a demanding workload in
her senior year of high school,” noted Maureen Donnelly at Cancer Family Care.
“It is rare to see (such a) depth of wisdom in a young woman who is beginning
her life…it is apparent that she embraces opportunities to learn about the
experiences of others and to find ways to support them. This is part of her
wonderful spirit.”
