The tornado, with wind velocities up to 318-miles per hour, was described as one of the worst in history. Ignoring the damage to her own home, our national winner drove straight to the local school knowing it would be a good base for rescue operations. Kathryn quickly organized the triage operations, performed first aid and directed the evacuation of emergency vehicles. She also organized records of those who came in, the nature of their injuries, and the hospital where they were taken.
Along with these exceptional contributions in the aftermath of the tornado, Kathryn offered still another act of profound selflessness and service. She created a morgue and cared for the bodies of 18 neighbors and friends, some of whom were children. She lovingly covered the deceased, helped identify them, and later, assisted in the discovery of the cause of death. Kathryn worked tirelessly to ensure that those who died retained their dignity.
For days after the tornado, she physically cleared up debris from her students' homes that were still standing. Kathryn also helped make housing arrangements for the homeless. And now in the aftermath, she has brought healing and strength, helping her community overcome and triumph as it rebuilds.
Despite her own reeling emotions, this amazing woman said it was a privilege to care for her friends in their greatest hour of need. Many of the victims' families stated she eased their pain and suffering and they will be forever grateful for her heroics and compassion.
Kathryn Turner defines courage under fire.
Our special congratulations to Kathryn our Spirit of Women National Winner in the Community Category.
