National Community, Over 21, Winner Nebraska Health System, Omaha, Nebraska As the founding member of the Fairfax Neighborhood Association, Mildred Lee worked tirelessly to reclaim and rebuild her neighborhood that had become a drug infested, crime-riddled environment -- a situation that was as dangerous as it was undesirable. Unwilling to be driven from her home, Mildred's efforts resulted in Omaha's selection by the Department of Justice as one of three original Weed and Seed sites -- a crime prevention strategy that has brought almost $6 million to the city since 1991. Mildred served as president of her neighborhood association and led a community group, including clergy and law enforcement officials, to restore peace and security to their homes.
Her initiatives as president have included the purchase of a vacant lot that was slated to become a dumping ground that she transformed into a neighborhood green area. She also encouraged the neighborhood's elderly residents to take advantage of city programs to assist with the rehabilitation of their homes.
Mildred's determination and influence can be felt far beyond the reaches of her own neighborhood. She has networked with several state agencies to establish "Safe Haven" after-school programs that foster interaction between latchkey children and the elderly. By sharing her lessons learned, Mildred assists several groups across the state in efforts to take back their neighborhoods from the clutches of crime.
As a result of her devotion, Mildred's neighborhood is a safe place where strong community relationships ensure that security. Mildred is renowned because of her strong conviction, leadership abilities, amazing courage and her desire to improve the lives of the residents in her neighborhood and beyond. Her vision and commitment have truly made a difference, not only for her neighbors, but for all people who can learn about civic responsibility by her example.
